Founded in 1998, New Jersey-based LifebankUSA offers both private banking and public donation storage. The bank provides additional storage options for the placenta, which increases the amount of stem cells collected during processing.
History and Leadership
- 1998: LifebankUSA was established.
- 2002: The company was acquired by a pharmaceutical company, Celgene, and became a business unit known as Celgene Cellular Therapeutics (CCT).
- 2017: CCT spun out from Celgene to become the independent cellular therapy company Celularity. LifeBankUSA continues to operate as a subsidiary.

Collection, Processing, and Storage
Collection and Transport
- Anticoagulant: CPD (citrate phosphate dextrose), a standard anticoagulant, is in its collection bag.
- Collection Kit: LifebankUSA provides a collection kit to all donor families, which includes a Chloraprep disinfectant for cleaning the umbilical cord before processing. The kit maintains room temperature for several hours.
- Transport Logistics: A medical courier service transports the collected unit to the lab.
Stem Cell Processing
LifebankUSA uses Hetastarch (HES), an industry standard for processing the cord blood. Separate storage bags are used to process umbilical cord blood and placenta stem cells.
Storage Bag
LifebankUSA uses a 2-compartment storage bag for cryopreservation.
